As it has been highly publicised in the news, the Fitter Windows team has created this helpful advice article on what the Kent or Essex homeowner need to know about the Green Homes Grant. Last week (Tuesday, August 4), Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak released some more information about the grant, that will come into effect at the end of September. This scheme will run for six months until the end of March 2021, with more information available here.
What’s Included In the Grant?
- Homeowners in England can claim vouchers up to £5,000 for energy efficient home improvements
- Low-income homes can claim up to £10,000
- Primary Measures that can be carried out include:
- Solid Wall, Under-Floor, Cavity Wall or Roof Insulation
- Air Source or Ground Source Heat Pumps
- Solar Thermal
- Secondary Measures include:
- Replace Single Glazing Products
- Upgrading to Energy Efficient Doors
- Hot Water Tank/Appliance Tank Thermostats/Heating Controls
Installers must also be signed up to the TrustMark scheme.
What Does This Mean for the Homeowner?
It’s clear that the grant will focus on more primary improvements before secondary measures are carried out. Importantly, you can only receive a grant for a secondary measure if you have first applied and had approved a primary measure. Therefore, if you have done all of the primary measures, you are not eligible to receive a grant for a secondary measure. The homeowner can apply for funding for secondary measures but it does not exceed the money that is made available for primary measures.
Can I Upgrade My Double Glazing?
It’s worth noting that if you already have your windows double glazed, then you will not be able to apply for a grant to replace it. Only existing single glazed windows qualify.
For door replacement, there is an opportunity to upgrade, although it is still a secondary measure. Homeowners that had doors installer prior to 2002 could meet the eligibility requirements. At this stage, it is unclear whether it covers just front doors, or whether back doors such as patio or French designs will be included within the scheme.
Can Only Be Carried Out by an Accredited Company
Installers who want to qualify for the scheme have to hold an accreditation from TrustMark. This scheme gives the homeowner complete peace of mind that the improvements being carried out are to the highest standard by an accredited professional, with the work itself protected.
How Do I Get Advice on Improvements?
The Essex or Kent homeowner can find advice about the energy rating of their home, advice and support on the Simple Energy Advice (SEA) website. Once the works are agreed, vouchers will be issued from the end of September, allowing work to commence. More information on the government’s official Green Homes Grant statement can be found here.
